LA MIRADA, CA (JULY 12, 2022) – A black and white flag is starting to rise in the desert.

Valley FC Raiders, with their skull-and-crossbones banner, needed a big win and the club got it to take the NISA Independent Cup Southwest Region and get a match against Valley United FC on July 23.

"I think it's amazing. I think this opportunity is great for our boys and great for them to get a little taste of what it's like outside of minor leage soccer," Valley FC Raiders Owner Lanny Gholston said. "Getting to play any pro team allows our players to create momentum for themselves."

The Gilbert, AZ-based club drew 1-1 vs. East Valley United on June 30, and followed it up with a massive 5-0 victory over SC Saguaros on Saturday, July 9 to finish with 15 points based on the NISA Independent Cup scoring system and edge one point ahead of East Valley (14 points).

"I'm very proud of the boys and their effort to win the Southwest group against two very tough squads in East Valley United and SC Saguaros," Valley FC Raiders Head Coach Tim Schicky said. "Down a goal and a man 13 minutes in against East Valley, the team defended as a unit at every level to not give up another goal while pushing for the equalizer to draw at 1-1.

"The boys knew what was needed to be done against SC Saguaros in order to win the group. They went out and did just that. Very strong character and perserverace by this group of young men," Shicky said.

This is the club's first appearance in the NISA Independent Cup.

All NISA Independent Cup matches are broadcast on Eleven Sports.
